Home Depot Return Policy

Everything You Need To Know and How to Automatically Extend Your Return Window Using Sift

By the time you get home from shopping at Home Depot, you realized that you might need to return some items. Maybe you bought another power washer without realizing you had the same model in your garage, or that new can of paint doesn’t match the ones you have for dining room. This is where the Home Depot return policy can come in handy. Essentially, the policy works like this:

Most unopened merchandise sold by Home Depot can be returned within 90 days of purchase; for purchases made with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or the Home Depot Commercial Account, items may be returned 365 days from the time of purchase (Exceptions apply. See below for an overview).

That’s fairly straight-forward. But did you know that if you made your purchases with plastic, you’re more than likely to be covered by your credit card’s return protection? Typically return protection doubles the return policy’s length, extending the return window to the Home Depot return policy after it “expires”. Additionally, by using Sift, you can keep track of just when you can return those mismatched blinds. Best of all, it’s automatic.

In this article, we’ll take a look at how the Home Depot return policy works, exclusions to the policy, and how Sift makes this process automatic so you can concentrate on beautifying your home.

The Home Depot Return Policy – Explained

As mentioned before, new and unopened merchandise with a receipt can be returned to stores within 90 days for an exchange, refund, or store credit. You have two options to return Home Depot items: in-store and online

In-Store:

Bring back the item with all of its components/parts back to the store with a receipt to the Returns/Customer Service area to be processed by a Home Depot employee. A valid government-issued ID (i.e. driver’s license) is required for non-receipt items and items originally purchased with Store Credit. Special Order returns/cancellations may be subject to a 15% restocking fee and must be returned to the same location as the original purchase.

Online:

If your order is eligible for an online return, you will need to process your return by printing out a shipping label and drop off the item at a UPS store/dropbox.

Exemptions to the Home Depot Return Policy

Because Home Depot offers a wide selection of items, not everything is covered by the standard Home Depot return policy:

  • 30-Day Return Policy: There are a number of items that only have a 30-day window to return. This includes furniture, mattresses, area rugs, generators (other than whole-house and stationary generators), gas-powered equipment, tractors, and consumer electronics.
  • Major Appliance: Customers must verify that their major appliance (i.e. refrigerator, washer/dryer, ranges, microwaves, etc.) is free from defects and damage before delivery. If the appliance is damaged or defected, the customer should refuse delivery. If delivery is accepted, the product may only be returned within 48 hours of the delivery day.
  • Hazardous Materials: Returns for hazardous materials (i.e. muriatic acid, gasoline) must be returned in-store.
  • Live Goods: Perennials, shrubs, and trees come with a 1-year guarantee. Online orders that are determined damaged or dead upon arrival have a 3-day window for returns at no charge.
  • Damaged or Missing Parts: If you’ve received an order which is damaged, incomplete, or in need of replacement parts, you must contact Customer Support (1-800-430-3376) within 30 days for replacement/resolution.

The following is a list of non-returnable/non-refundable items:

  • Cut flowers and floral arrangements
  • Gift cards
  • Store credit
  • Major Appliances
  • Whole House and Stationary Generators
  • Utility Trailers
  • Product Samples
  • Paint
  • Blinds that aren’t identified as “Guaranteed to Fit”

Credit Card Return Protection

If you’ve missed the return window, be aware that any purchase you make at Home Depot with a credit card may be protected by your credit card’s “return protection” perk. Return protection allows you to typically double the return window, creates a return policy for items that may not fit under the Home Depot return policy, and may help you receive a statement credit for the item’s purchase price if it is rejected by Home Depot.

Of course, every credit card issuer is different. Some companies require an elaborate claims process that can be time-consuming or only allow for certain items to qualify for refunds. For a full rundown on participating brands and how they work, click here .

With this in mind, you should know that there’s an app that can keep track of your purchases and the extended return window, as well as automatically filing claims on your behalf. By using Sift, all of these function can make your life easier, managing your credit card purchases at Home Depot and how long you have before the extended return window runs out.

To automatically track of all your extended credit card return protections and to unlock additional credit card benefits, download Sift from the Apple Store or Google Play.
